Charlie Lense - CSPC Volunteer of the MonthCHARLIE LENZ —   VOLUNTEER of the MONTH

Our volunteers are many and varied. They cover a variety of skills and backgrounds. The more varied the better as we try to match up our clients to our volunteers for the best fit. That way we can put some friendships in the match-ups. We are ever so grateful to get a volunteer as talented as Charlie Lenz.

Charlie was a powerhouse engineer in Whitehouse, Yukon in 1975. This is where he met Helen, his wife of 41 years and mother of their five children. He decided he had enough of shift work and pursued being a Pastor, which is his forte.

He spent four years with the Anglican diocese in the Yukon, then on to Burnaby with the “Christ the King” church for 11 years. He retired in Chilliwack in 2015 after serving the Saint Thomas Anglican church for 12 years.

Charlie was one of the people, along with Nick DeRegt, who started The Bridge Soup Kitchen. This project was a joint effort with the five churches in Chilliwack. He also volunteers with the Red Cross Medical Equipment volunteer services, the “Read to Me” program and the Immigrant Services with CCS and with Chilliwack and District Senior Resources. He has been a non-stop outstanding Chilliwack community member.

We are thankful to have him as a volunteer with the Chilliwack Senior Peers Counsellors.

Every year, more than 800,000 people die by suicide and up to 25 times as many make a suicide attempt. Behind these statistics are the individual stories of those who have, for many different reasons, questioned the value of their own lives.
Each one of these individuals is part of a community. Some may be well linked in to this community, and have a network of family, friends and work colleagues or school mates. Others may be less well connected, and some may be quite isolated. Regardless of the circumstances, communities have an important role to play in supporting those who are vulnerable.

This sentiment is reflected in the theme of the 2017 World Suicide Prevention Day: ‘Take a minute, change a life.’
